Allsvenskan: IFK Göteborg – Malmö FF | Match Preview

Two of the most prestigious football clubs in Sweden, IFK Göteborg and Malmö FF, will face each other in the opening match of the 2017 Allsvenskan, which is the Swedih top tier football league, at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg.

Jörgen Lennartsson will enter his third season as the head coach of IFK Göteborg, one of the most prestigious football clubs in Sweden. His first year brought the club to a second place in 2015 Allsvenskan, losing the title by just few points to IFK Norrköping. Nevertheless, he managed to win the 2014/2015 Svenska Cupen by beating Örebro SK at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg.

The 2016 Allsvenskan was a disappointing season for Jörgen Lennartsson and IFK Göteborg. They finished on a fourth place with 50 points, ten points behind IFK Norrköping. They were recently narrowly eliminated from the 2016/2017 Svenska Cupen after a defeat to IFK Norrköping, which was their latest match.

Nevertheless, Jörgen Lennartsson said in his pre-match press conference ahead of the match against the Swedish champions that he has a huge desire to respond to IFK Göteborg’s failure in recent years.

The Swedish champions Malmö FF are not the same team as they were last season. Allan Kuhn was sacked from his position as head coach by Malmö FF despite that he brought home the title to Malmö. Allan Kuhn has been replaced Magnus Pehrsson as the new head coach.

Malmö FF collected overall 66 points in last season’s Allsvenskan, making them the winners of the Swedish top tier football league. Malmö FF have qualified for the qualifying stages of the 2017/2018 UEFA Champions League. Their main ambition and priority this season will be to reach the group stage of the UEFA Champions League for the third time in four years.

Malmö FF were held by the Norwegian football Molde in a two-goal draw away from home, in a pre-season friendly match.

IFK Göteborg and Malmö FF have faced each other in 170 matches. IFK Göteborg have won 61 and Malmö FF 71 of them. 38 matches have ended in draws. IFK Göteborg suffered a three-one defeat to Malmö FF at Malmö Stadium in September 2016.

Last match between IFK Göteborg and Malmö FF at Gamla Ullevi took place in April 2016, which was abandoned and Malmö FF were handed a three-nil victory after turmoil inside the stadium by the Swedish football association, Sveriges Fotbollsförbund.

Swedish champions Malmö FF have won four out of the last five matches against IFK Göteborg in Allsvenskan. Only one match in August 2014 ended in a four-goal draw at Malmö Stadium.
