Allsvenskan: GIF Sundsvall | Team Preview

GIF Sundsvall will host the Allsvenskan debutants AFC Eskilstuna at Norrporten Arena on April 2, 2017 in their opening match of the 2017 Allsvenskan.


GIF Sundsvall is a Swedish football club, which is based in Sundsvall, a city that is located in the northern parts of Sweden.

GIF Sundsvall finished the 2016 Allsvenskan on a 13th place, just avoiding relegation playoff. They managed to win seven matches and draw nine matches, collecting overall 30 points. Just one point ahead of Helsingborgs IF, who finished on a 14th place and relegation playoff. GIF Sundsvall suffered 14 defeats.

In the 2016 Allsvenskan, GIF Sundsvall scored 38 goals and conceded 54 goals. Stefan Silva was crowned the top goalscorer for GIF Sundsvall in 2016 Allsvenskan with his seven goals. Eric Larsson made seven assists, becoming GIF Sundsvall’s assist king.

CLUB HISTORY
The club was formed on August 25, 1903 at Matilda Anderssons Café. At that time, GIF Sundsvall stood for “Godtemplarnas Idrotts Förening Sundsvall” which mainly was for Teetotallers up until the alcohol demands was lightened in 1920. The initials then came to stand for, to this day still, “Gymnastik och Idrottsföreningen Sundsvall” (ENG: Gymnastics and sports club Sundsvall).

The club reached the first tier of the domestic football in 1965. The club has since been a “yo-yo team” mainly playing in the second tier league, Superettan, but with Allsvenskan stints in 1975, 1987–89, 1991, 2000–06, 2008, 2012 and since 2015.
